Therapy in your handbag! This book was insightful and helpful in describing the different ways people struggle and the different methods/activities/tools one can use to better manage themselves。One of my favourite 'tools' was the "self soothe kit"。 When you are emotionally volatile you are not in a state to make the best decisions for yourself。 A self soothe kit is something you create in advance for yourself to calm your senses and ground yourself。 Your kit might have a journal to write in, sel Therapy in your handbag! This book was insightful and helpful in describing the different ways people struggle and the different methods/activities/tools one can use to better manage themselves。One of my favourite 'tools' was the "self soothe kit"。 When you are emotionally volatile you are not in a state to make the best decisions for yourself。 A self soothe kit is something you create in advance for yourself to calm your senses and ground yourself。 Your kit might have a journal to write in, selection of calming tea bags, playlist of songs/music to listen too, photos/trinkets from happy holiday, prompts for breathing exercises, aromatherapy oils/favourite scent, tactile objects and lists of things/people that can help you (favourite movie/books, speak to a friend, take a nap etc)。 This was my "why has nobody told me this before?" moments。 I feel like everyone should have one of these kits! The kit is is just one of the suggestions。 There are plenty more and I am confident most people will find something that resonates with them。 You don't have to read the whole book, you can just skip to the tool box or chapters that best describes your concern。 。。。more

I listened to the audiobook version of this book。I'm someone who has struggled with anxiety and with other mental health problems from time to time。 By the time I listened to this audiobook, most of my anxiety was under much better control, but I was surprised by how much of the advice were behaviors I've already adapted for myself, on my own。I've been through a major health issue for the past several years - undiagnosed hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's, thyroid cancer, even more severe hypothyroidis I listened to the audiobook version of this book。I'm someone who has struggled with anxiety and with other mental health problems from time to time。 By the time I listened to this audiobook, most of my anxiety was under much better control, but I was surprised by how much of the advice were behaviors I've already adapted for myself, on my own。I've been through a major health issue for the past several years - undiagnosed hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's, thyroid cancer, even more severe hypothyroidism, anemia, fibroids, estrogen dysregulation - it was a lot。 The hypothyroidism caused my estrogen levels to go out of control, which contributed both to a huge uterine fibroid, and clearly influenced my severe anxiety since it was tied to hormonal fluctuations。 It turns out, hormones are really important to your physical and mental health, and mental health can actually be a physical issue。A few months ago, I finally worked up the courage to apply for a job (in a different state, in a position that would be challenging to return to after several years away)。 I immediately freaked out, doubting myself, doubting my abilities。 When I started to feel stressed out or anxious, I would repeat to myself "kindness and patience"。 This is what I would tell someone else in my position, who has taken a break from work due to health reasons, and so I practiced it on myself, I needed to treat myself with kindness and patience while preparing to return to work and apply for jobs。 This is one of the techniques described in this book, and I can affirm it works wonders。 Treating yourself how you would treat someone else in a similar position is such a powerful technique。 Facing your fears is a scary prospect。 But, if you want your life to be different, sometime it is necessary。 Applying for a job, opening myself up to possibly being rejected was scary。 Moving is scary。 But now with the move behind me and currently settling in well with my new job, I feel like I'm making progress to get back on track with the life I wanted prior to all my medical issues。The author repeats over and over again how important exercise is to your mental health。 I have no idea how this works, but I realized long ago that I feel less hypothyroidism symptoms (I still get afternoon fatigue most days) when I run in the morning。 I notice a completely different mood at work now on days I run in the morning (which is most mornings)。 Even prior to all my health issues, I realized I would get real moody if I took more than a couple days off from running。There is lots of good advice in here, some of it I have already used prior to reading (listening to) the book, stumbling my way into actual coping strategies。 The coping strategies worked for me during my recent anxiety from job interviews and moving, however, when my anxiety was spiraling out of control back when my estrogen was out of whack, I'm not sure any coping strategies would have helped。 A lot of the advice can help, but depending on the situation, it may not work for everyone。 Nothing has worked wonders on my mental health better than actually getting healthy。This book might be useful for many - there are so many techniques discussed in this book。 I can't remember medication being mentioned, but I'll just put this in here。 Using cognitive behavior techniques to control anxiety and depression is great, if it works for you。 I also know many people who have been helped by taking medication for anxiety and/or depression, and it works well for them。 I never felt great on anti-anxiety meds myself, and I was on them twice, both times for several months but less than a year, after a major anxiety spiral。 But, in hindsight, I clearly should have been on thyroid medication and not anti-anxiety meds because my actual problem was my thyroid, which was royally screwing up my estrogen levels。 Medication for mental health problems is often stigmatized, but it can be very helpful in addition to trying to cognitive techniques, depending on the individual。 Taking medication doesn't make you weak or a failure, and for some people it can help you feel better and manage your anxiety or depression better than cognitive techniques alone。 。。。more
